Spring 2026 Student Choreographer Auditions

Auditions / Interviews of Student Choreography for the Spring 2026 dance concert will take place on Thursday January 29th, 2026 from 10am – 4pm.

The concert theme is “Once Upon a Time.” 

Details for the concert theme:

All dance pieces must be inspired by published fairy tale books, characters, or stories; not from the realm of video games or movies. Fairy tales typically include magical elements and fantastical beings such as fairies, dragons, and talking animals. Student choreographers may choose to focus on characters such as villains, princesses, heroes, magical creatures; and are encouraged to explore classic fairy tale themes such as good versus evil, transformation, and its folklore origins.

All pieces should communicate a strong narrative through the movement of dance.

You may use any musical selection as long as it supports the storytelling and clearly helps convey the chosen fairy tale or characters throughout the choreography.

*Disney-related soundtrack music is not permitted.​​

Audition/Interviews will take place every 15 minutes.

If interested please prepare the following:

1) Make an appointment with artistic director, Dana Maue-Donaldson by emailing dmaue@swccd.edu

2) Fill out google audition form that will be emailed to you after making appointment time. 

3) Prepare 1:00 minute of choreography and present it to the committee with your selected music.

4) Discuss your ideas, theme, costumes and intent of your choreography.

• Selected student choreographers will be notified later that evening.
• Student choreographers will be assigned a designated day/rehearsal time and will hold an audition for a dancer / dancers during their regularly scheduled rehearsal time the week of February 6th – 12th.
• Student choreography will go through a second audition during the week of March 16th -20th during their regular rehearsal time.

Spring dance concert dates are: Thursday April 30th  – Saturday May 2nd  @ 7:30pm. 

TECH:  Sat. April 25th: 9a – 6p  (9am – 10am finale choreo – mandatory for all student choreographers and dancers)

                 Sun. April 26th: 9a – 6p  (9am – 10am finale choreo – mandatory for all student choreographers and dancers)

* each choreographer will have an hour to tech according to schedule*

DRESS REHEARSALS:  Tues. April 28th:  5:00pm – 9:30pm

                                                    Wed.  April 29th:  5:00pm – 9:30pm

* we will run the show twice through with finale*

 PERFORMANCES:    Thursday April 30th – Saturday May 2nd @7:30pm (Call time 5:30pm, show 7:30pm)   

• Student choreographers and dancers will need to enroll in two classes to receive credit and to participate in the Spring Dance Concert: Dance Rehearsal workshop DANC 129-01 (1 unit) and Dance Performance Workshop DANC 133-60 (1 unit).

**ALL STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHERS ACCEPTED INTO THE DANCE CONCERT WILL NEED TO ENROLL IN DANCE PRODUCTION (DANC 125-01) OR THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN SHOW.** (Dance Production class meets on M/W 1:20p – 3:10p).
